President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will commence implementation of recommendations from Ghana’s constitutional review process early next year.

The President made the disclosure on Monday, December 22, after receiving the final report from the Constitution Review Committee. He said an implementation committee would be constituted to oversee the process.

According to President Mahama, the committee will be carefully selected to ensure integrity, credibility, and public trust, emphasizing that the non-partisan nature of the review will help Ghanaians unite around the proposed reforms.

“Our 1992 Constitution has served us very well, but there comes a time when adjustments are necessary to ensure it continues to serve the country into the future,” he said.

He added that while some of the committee’s recommendations may appear radical or revolutionary, they are in the best interest of Ghana’s democracy, particularly as several countries in the sub-region face democratic setbacks.

The President noted that the report has been handed over to the Attorney-General and legal counsel for detailed review, after which government will harmonize its views with the committee’s proposals.

He also indicated that some members of the review committee may be invited to serve on the implementation committee to ensure continuity and preserve institutional memory.

President Mahama commended the committee, chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, for its work and urged Ghanaians to remain confident in democratic governance, describing it as “the best system for unlocking the creative potential of citizens.”
