Maradona Adjei Yeboah, also known as Guru NKZ, has been elected as the President of the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) following a closely contested election.
Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, secured a decisive victory with 9,455 votes, representing 50.7% of the total votes cast. Their closest rivals, Emmanuel Wusu Amponsah and Lawrence Edinam Egleh, garnered 6,645 votes, making up 35.6% of the vote.
The election, which saw a total of 18,659 students casting their ballots, came after a dramatic turn of events. Guru NKZ was originally disqualified from the race for not meeting the SRC constitutional requirement that presidential candidates must be resident students eligible for Junior Common Room (JCR) positions. However, following a successful petition to the Appeals Board, the board ruled 7-0 in favor of reinstating Guru and his running mate, a decision that significantly altered the course of the race.
Guru’s victory not only marks a personal win but also sets a precedent for future SRC elections, as his case challenged the interpretation of certain constitutional provisions.
In other results, the General Secretary position was claimed by Lorinda Owie Teyehugmeh with 46.7% of the votes, and Jonathan Kankam won the Treasurer race with 43.5%, narrowly defeating Roland Oppong, who secured 48.7% of the votes.
The elections drew significant attention across the campus, with a turnout reflecting the growing engagement of the student body in governance matters. The new SRC leadership, under Guru NKZ, is expected to shape the student union’s direction for the coming year.
