The Ghana Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for the launch of the “Feed Ghana Programme,” describing it as a bold and strategic intervention to transform Ghana’s agriculture, strengthen food security, and revive the poultry sector.
President Mahama officially launched the flagship initiative at Techiman in the Bono East Region, outlining his vision to make agriculture the driving force of Ghana’s economic recovery.
He said the programme seeks to modernize farming, create jobs for young people, and boost agro-industrial production to ensure food self-sufficiency.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 8, GVMA lauded the government’s renewed focus on agriculture in the 2025 budget and particularly welcomed the decision to deploy 5,000 agriculture and veterinary science graduates nationwide.
The Association described the move as “a transformative step” that will empower professionals to play a direct role in ensuring national food resilience.
The GVMA also highlighted the ‘Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti’ poultry initiative as a critical component of the Feed Ghana Programme, aligning perfectly with the Association’s mission to guarantee a safe, sustainable, and secure animal protein supply for Ghanaians.
The Association outlined several priority areas for its members’ involvement, including providing veterinary care, vaccination, and biosecurity support to poultry farmers.
GVMA also called on government to strengthen the animal health system by establishing a Veterinary Services Authority to enforce animal health and biosecurity standards, amongst others.
The GVMA urged all stakeholders—including farmers, aggregators, and local assemblies—to work closely with veterinary professionals to achieve the programme’s objectives.
