A member of the NDC communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of abandoning the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit system, calling the decision a setback for efforts to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in major cities.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Monday, January 19, 2026, Suhuyini said the Aayalolo initiative was designed to provide a reliable public transport alternative and encourage workers to rely less on private vehicles.
“We introduced for the first time the Aayalolo bus to ply on certain intended routes to ensure it also acted as an incentive for workers to more or less stop driving their own vehicles to work,” he said, citing established public transport systems in cities such as London as examples.
According to Suhuyini, the programme lost momentum after the NPP assumed office, with the government showing limited commitment to sustaining and expanding it over the last eight years.
He added that investments in transport infrastructure under the Aayalolo system declined significantly during that period.
Suhuyini also questioned the effectiveness of the NPP’s alternative transport intervention, the electric bus initiative.
“They attempted what they called the E-bus and imported about 50 buses or so,” he said. “What is the success story about that novelty that they made so much noise about? Zero.”
