The Asutifi North Member of Parliament, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has dismissed claims that he played a role in inciting a mob that attacked the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) team at Hwidiem.
In a detailed statement, the MP explained that his actions were aimed at de-escalating tensions and ensuring the safe handover of suspects and confiscated items to the police.
According to Mr. Addo, he had been on his way to a funeral when he learned of the military operation targeting illegal miners.
Upon arriving at the site, he interacted with the NAIMOS team and advised that the matter be officially handled at the police station to prevent further unrest.
He also called on the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem to assist in safely evacuating the military personnel after tensions escalated, resulting in damage to the Chief’s vehicle.
“I wish to state that under no circumstance will I incite the youth against security officers and any government planned agenda. As a responsible lawmaker, I offered my support to ensure there is calmness in the area and will always work together with every security agency to maintain law and order,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to take over the probe, and Mr. Addo has been invited to assist with the investigation.
Authorities continue to investigate the attack on the NAIMOS team, the mob activity, and property damage, as efforts to hold perpetrators accountable proceed.
