The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals in connection with violent incidents that occurred during the recent Ablekuma North constituency rerun.
The rerun, held on Friday, July 11, 2025, was marred by clashes that saw political party officials and journalists attacked at 19 polling stations.
The unrest followed unresolved voter verification issues during the December 2024 general elections, which had left the constituency without parliamentary representation.
Addressing the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP stated that the eight suspects are currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court on Thursday, August 21, or Friday, August 22.
“Eight suspects have been arrested as of yesterday. They are being processed, and from the advice I have from the regional commander, by tomorrow or Friday all these suspects will be sent to court,” he stated.
He reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to holding all perpetrators accountable, including officers who fail to uphold professional standards.
Addressing concerns over a police officer allegedly involved in assaulting a journalist, the IGP clarified that the officer has been interdicted and is subject to a service inquiry.
“Within the shortest possible time, we withdrew this policeman, and also what we did was that we had to interdict him. When you are interdicted, your uniform is taken away from you, you cannot go back to work. And there is a rumour going around that we have transferred the policeman from where he is to another police station, which is never true,” the IGP explained.
The IGP assured that the Ghana Police Service remains resolute in enforcing law and order, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance on election-related violence.
He stressed that the integrity of elections and public trust depends on the professionalism of law enforcement personnel.
The Police Service has pledged to continue pursuing all individuals responsible for the unrest to ensure justice is served.
