The Electoral Commission (EC) says significant progress has been made in resolving discrepancies in the voter register.
Speaking during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held at the Alisa Hotel on October 1, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa assured political stakeholders that concerns raised about the provisional voter register presented in August have been addressed.
Mrs. Mensa emphasized that while minor imperfections are typical in any registration process, the EC had already taken steps to correct the discrepancies detected since the register’s initial release.
“These errors are not unusual. All it takes are conscientious efforts to get them resolved,” Mensa said, reassuring political party representatives that the provisional register is not final and has been significantly improved.
The EC employed a rigorous, multi-step approach to clean the register, including feedback from voters, scrutiny by field staff, and thorough reviews by the Commission’s IT team. Mensa noted that the register currently presented to political parties is a much-improved version of what was available in early August.
“You will realize that the voters register for today is different from what was provided to the parties in August,” she explained.
According to her, “The register that we have today is different from what was given to the political parties in August”.
She continued: “We have a track record of delivering free and fair elections. Our staff are well trained, and we have what it takes to produce a credible register”.
Mensa also pointed out that the EC used the same process as in 2020, which resulted in a credible final voter register.
She expressed confidence that the EC will deliver a similarly robust register for the 2024 elections, urging political parties and the public to trust the Commission’s work.
