President of Ghana Athletics, Bawah Fuseini, has called on the government and the athletics federation to provide maximum support for athletes, especially as they prepare for the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.
Bawah Fuseini, who was recently named Best African President in Athletics and also recognized as SWAG President of the Year, made the appeal during an interview on Starr Sports Digest with Benjamin Yamoah on Starr FM.
“As a federation and as a state, we must support the athletes financially now that they are performing well. If not, we will have ourselves to blame when things go wrong,” he said.
He further urged the government to extend the same level of support given to football to athletics.
When asked about the recurring baton change issues that have plagued Ghana’s relay teams in recent years, Bawah attributed the problem to limited training time. He explained, “The athletes do not have the luxury of time to train on baton exchanges because they live in different parts of the USA, making it difficult to assemble them. We often have to train at the competition venue or sometimes just a day before the event. But with adequate training, the issue can be resolved.”
Ghana is expected to participate in the upcoming World Athletics Championship in Tokyo this September, competing in the 100m and 4x100m relay events. The country is hopeful of clinching a medal.
