An Israeli official has said even though Israel is not happy with Ghana’s decision to vote against them at the UN over Jerusalem, they are “used” to other countries having different opinions about issues.
According to Oded Halamit, the Jewish people were elated with the decision of the US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Thursday, Halamat who is with Israel’s Center for International Agricultural Development Cooperation (CINADCO) said the middle east nation has always seen Jerusalem as their capital since it was created by the UN.
“We would love to have peace with Palestinians but they are refusing to do so from their reasons. Since the UN created Israel, we decided that Jerusalem will be our capital because for 2000 years we had been praying for it. Even before the 60 day war in which we conquered back Jerusalem from the Jordanians nobody was speaking about Palestine. For 70 years it has been my capital. I was very happy by the declaration of Trump but not so much happy about the declaration of Ghanaians. But we are used to other people having other opinions and we can live with it,” he said.
His comments come after the Israeli ambassador in Ghana sparked anger among Ghanaians for suggesting that Ghana’s vote against Israel at the UN general assembly was a mistake which must not be repeated.
“The Embassy of the State of Israel in Ghana therefore regrets the mistaken vote of Ghana against the State of Israel during the Special United Nation’s (UN) General Assembly sitting on Thursday, 21 December 2017 as the assembly adopted a resolution regarding Israel’s capital Jerusalem. We hope such mistake will not be repeated by Ghana in subsequent motions,” the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana Ami Mehl said in a statement on Friday, December 22, 2017,” Ami Mehl said in a statement.
