The Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has indicated it will soon undertake undergraduate programmes in peace and security to enhance the frontier of education in that aspect. The revelation which comes on the back of activities to commemorate 20 years since its establishment is expected to be a furtherance of the progress made from the centre handling just raining courses.
“The Centre has progressed from delivering training courses in three thematic areas: Peace Support Operations, Conflict Management and Peace and Security Studies to running Masters and PhD versions of these thematic areas.” Commandante of the KAIPTC, Major General Richard Addo Gyane touted.
“As a way of enhancing the development, growth and efficiency of what used to be the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research (FAAR). This year the Faculty has been split into Applied Research Department and a Faculty of Academic Affairs to be known and called “The Kofi Annan School of Peace and Security Studies (KASPSS)”. The school is autonomous and forms part of the new National Defence University (NDU) that has been established by the Military High Command. It is responsible for post-Graduate and undergraduate academic programmes, and shall incorporate a Language Department for the study of Languages at the KAIPTC”, he further revealed.
Meanwhile, the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul has urged the centre to ensure it remains unwavering in its commitment to peace and security.
“We must remain unwavering in our commitment in advancing the principles of peace and security enshrined in the United Nation’s Charter and the Africa Unions Agenda 2063”, he said in a speech read on his behalf by Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu.
“Our priority must be the protection of civilians promoting human rights and including women, youth and marginalized groups in peace processes”.
