The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has assured the general public that the relocation of the 470MW Karpowership Barge to Sekondi will not have any adverse impact on electricity supply to consumers.
According to GRIDCo, there is adequate generating capacity to meet power demand during the period that the Barge will be temporarily disconnected from the national grid.
The Tema-based Karadeniz Powership, Osman Khan which adds 450MW of power to the national grid will from Tuesday, August 13, shut down for 17-days to relocate to the Western Naval Command in Sekondi.
The anticipated 450MW power shortfall, however, will be cushioned by an increased production capacity of producers in the east (TT1PP, TT2PP, Asogli, Aska, Kpone Power), buoyed by the reverse flow of gas from the Western Region to Tema.
The planned relocation will not last beyond the 17 days, departing from the Tema Fishing Harbour on Thursday, August 15, and berthing at its new location within the Western Naval Command in Sekondi the next day.
The rest of the days would account for various pre-commissioning works to successfully connect to the 330KV transmission lines in Sekondi.
The relocation which is in line with government’s strategic policy for the powership to utilize natural gas from the current active oil fields in the Tano Basin of the Western region instead of relying on the more expensive light crude and heavy fuel oil, is expected to save the country millions of dollars annually.
The relocation would also cut the cost of transporting the gas from the regulatory and metering station of the Ghana National Gas Company in the Shama District via the West African Gas Pipeline.
