The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) recorded increases in specialist outpatient attendance, emergency cases and laboratory services during the first half of 2026, while institutional maternal deaths declined significantly compared with the same period in 2025.

Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, announced the figures on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at the hospital’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference.

He said specialist outpatient attendance between January and June 2026 reached 149,055, exceeding the mid-year target of 139,740 and representing a 3.61 per cent increase over the corresponding period in 2025.

Emergency attendance also increased to 14,467, compared with a target of 12,400. This represented an achievement rate of 116.67 per cent and an 8.66 per cent year-on-year increase.

Laboratory services recorded 174,367 cases against a target of 160,401, representing an achievement rate of 108.71 per cent and a 26.49 per cent increase over the previous year’s mid-year figure.

Primary care services recorded 37,500 cases against a target of 37,900.

One of the notable improvements was a reduction in institutional maternal deaths, which fell from 78 at mid-year 2025 to 55 during the corresponding period in 2026.

Despite the positive indicators, Dr. Baidoo said several areas of service delivery fell below the targets set by the hospital.

These included deliveries, surgeries, physiotherapy, radiotherapy and some admission figures.

He said the shortfalls would form part of the hospital’s corrective strategies as management reviewed its performance for the first six months of the year.

The CEO said the review was intended not only to assess achievements but also to identify weaknesses and use lessons from the first half of the year to guide operations during the remaining months.

He acknowledged that the hospital had faced challenges during the period, including severe congestion at the Accident and Emergency Centre, network problems and increasing demand for space to establish new specialist service and training centres.

Dr. Baidoo said management remained committed to improving service delivery and ensuring that specialist healthcare at KATH remained accessible, evidence-based and patient-centred.
