The African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion (AMPF MiM) 2026, Africa’s premier platform for mining policy coordination and investment, will take place from October 19–21, 2026, at Destiny Arena in Accra, Ghana. Organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative, led by Nana Kwaku Duah, son of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana, in partnership with the African Union, the summit will bring together policymakers, regulators, investors, mining companies and development partners to advance sustainable mining, local value creation and investment across Africa.
Returning for its second edition, AMPF MiM builds on the success of the 2025 summit, which attracted more than 600 participants from over 30 countries. The inaugural event featured senior policymakers including H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor, former President of Ghana, and mining ministers from Ghana, Liberia, Niger, Malawi, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s mining sector, including the empowerment and formalization of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).
The 2026 edition comes as African governments place greater emphasis on local beneficiation, ASM formalization, regional integration, infrastructure development and resource sharing, while global demand for the continent’s mineral resources continues to rise.

Ghana Leads Africa’s Gold Value Chain
Ghana will provide a key case study for discussions at AMPF MiM 2026 as the country strengthens its position across the gold value chain. Ghana has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with large-scale mining companies to secure 30% of their gold output for national strategic reserves under the Ghana Accelerated National Reserve Accumulation Policy. The initiative aims to strengthen foreign exchange reserves and improve the economy’s resilience to external shocks.
Other African countries, including Tanzania, Uganda and the DRC, are also strengthening central-bank gold purchasing programs, supporting efforts to capture greater value from the continent’s gold production and advance the objectives of the African Union’s Africa Mining Vision.
The continent’s ASM sector is central to this strategy, producing an estimated 1,000 tons of gold annually and accounting for around 50% of Africa’s gold output. Formalization therefore presents significant opportunities for employment, local entrepreneurship and stronger national gold value chains.
AMPF MiM 2026 will provide a platform for African policymakers and industry stakeholders to exchange best practices on strengthening gold value chains, expanding national reserves and improving regional cooperation.
Advancing Regional Mineral Beneficiation
Africa’s downstream mineral industry is also expanding, with Angola, the DRC, Mali, Burkina Faso, Uganda and Ghana developing new processing and refining capacity.
Ghana is at the forefront of this drive. Gold Coast Refinery, which has annual capacity exceeding 80 tons, is partnering with South Africa’s Rand Refinery to support Ghana’s target, established with the Ghana Gold Board, of refining up to one ton of ASM doré per week through formal government channels.
The partnership also supports the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which seeks to integrate Africa’s 54 countries into a single continental market.
AMPF MiM will bring together producers, refiners, policymakers and investors to identify opportunities for greater regional processing, investment and value addition.
Strengthening Africa’s ASM Sector
ASM formalization will remain another key priority. Ghana is implementing programs involving the Ghana Gold Board, planetGOLD Ghana, Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Small-Scale Mining Incubation Program, Mining Cooperatives Scheme and Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Program.
These initiatives aim to improve ASM access to finance, technical expertise and formal markets while promoting responsible mining and local economic development.
AMPF MiM 2026 will provide Ghana with an opportunity to showcase these initiatives while enabling African countries to share experiences and develop coordinated approaches to ASM formalization, beneficiation and investment.
Against this backdrop, AMPF MiM 2026 will serve as a platform for governments, investors and industry to shape policies and partnerships that enable Africa to capture greater economic value from its vast mineral resources.
