Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Hon. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has described former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as an “oracle” during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, alleging that he operated beyond scrutiny while in office.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed, the MP said that under the previous government, any attempt to question Mr. Ofori-Atta’s actions was either blocked or ignored, portraying him as untouchable within the political establishment.
“To be sincere with you, Ofori-Atta became an oracle. Nobody could say anything about him. You could not question him on his dealings,” Alamzy stated. “But today we are in power, and we believe that we are all equal before the law.”
The lawmaker dismissed suggestions that current inquiries into Mr. Ofori-Atta’s conduct are politically motivated. Instead, he argued that there are legitimate concerns regarding the former Minister’s stewardship that demand answers—particularly on projects like the National Cathedral, ambulance procurement, electricity contracts, and tax administration under the Ghana Revenue Authority.
“We are not after him because he was NPP or a former Finance Minister. There are genuine questions that we wish to ask as Ghanaians and as a government,” he stressed.
Alamzy further called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to remain impartial and diligent in its ongoing investigations, asserting that public confidence hinges on the office’s credibility and transparency.
“We want the OSP to do the work very well. And as I said earlier, we are keenly watching to see what will be done with this case,” he said.
The Chiana-Paga MP concluded with a warning to public officials, emphasising that accountability is inevitable.
“If you don’t behave well, God forbid, if we are out of power tomorrow, you will be subjected to the same rules,” he cautioned.
