The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has revealed that construction of a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is 20 percent complete.
Delivering his presentation at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, the Minister explained that the existing tower, commissioned in 1995, is outdated and no longer meets current aviation safety and operational requirements.
He noted that the new facility will be fitted with state-of-the-art systems designed to improve flight management, ensure safety in Ghana’s airspace, and support the country’s ambition to become a key aviation hub in the subregion.
“As part of government’s agenda to reset the transport sector, the construction of a new control tower at Kotoka International Airport is currently underway and is 20 percent complete. The new facility will provide advanced equipment and improved working space for air traffic controllers to operate efficiently,” Nikpe said.
He further disclosed that the government is deploying a Passenger Data Collection System across all international airports in Ghana to improve border management and enhance collaboration with security agencies. According to him, this system will strengthen aviation security and help track the movement of travelers more effectively.
The Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand Ghana’s aviation infrastructure. These include the modernization of Kumasi and Tamale airports, as well as initiatives to boost air cargo handling capacity to support trade and investment.
He stressed that these interventions are not isolated projects but part of a broader “Resetting Ghana Agenda” in the transport sector, aimed at creating efficiency, safety, and resilience across all modes of transport.
“The aviation sector is critical to our economic transformation. By investing in modern facilities, we are not only improving safety but also creating the conditions for growth in tourism, trade, and business travel,” the Minister emphasized.
The construction of the new ATC tower is expected to be completed within the project schedule, with the government assuring stakeholders that Ghana’s aviation infrastructure will remain globally competitive.
