The Executive Director of the Legal Aid Service, Edmond Folie, has revealed plans to harness the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy to expand access to justice for Ghanaians.
According to him, the initiative will help the Legal Aid Service provide more efficient and accessible support to justice seekers, particularly vulnerable groups.
Mr. Folie made this known while speaking at the ongoing Greater Accra Law Week celebration conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
“As we also live in an age of innovation, I’m happy to inform you that as the commission, we are considering and again working with the Greater Accra Bar to see how best we can provide calling services, and of course, working together with the policy of the current government to even expand to 24-hour services. Look at how best we can have a 24-hour call centre where we would have lawyers on call to provide legal advice, for this is one of our constitutional responsibilities and Article 294,” Mr. Folie stated.
He further emphasised that the Legal Aid Service is committed to promoting gender equality and access to justice for all, especially women who face barriers to legal support.
“I wish to remind you that this year as a country that believes in gender equality, one that has recently passed the Affirmative Action Act, we as a country fully support the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights Additional Protocol on the protection of women’s rights in Africa, our Maputo Protocol,” he noted.
Mr. Folie highlighted that the Legal Aid Service will mark this year’s Legal Aid Week in October with a special focus on expanding legal support to women who cannot easily access justice.
He commended the Greater Accra Bar Association for embracing the initiative and called on all stakeholders to collaborate in improving access to justice for every Ghanaian.
The Legal Aid Service believes integrating its operations into the 24-hour economy framework will ensure timely legal support, particularly for marginalised groups, and contribute to building a more just and inclusive society.
