President John Dramani Mahama has declared an end to Ghana’s long-standing dependence on rented properties for its embassies and missions abroad, describing the practice as a drain on public resources.
Speaking at the swearing-in of newly appointed Ambassadors and envoys at the Jubilee House on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the President revealed that government spends over $15 million each year on rent for diplomatic offices and residences — an expense he insists is unsustainable.
“Ghana cannot continue spending a staggering more than 15 million dollars every year on renting properties abroad for our diplomatic use. This is not a judicious use of taxpayers’ resources, and the reset agenda requires an immediate reversal of this trend,” Mahama stressed.
He announced the launch of the STRIDE initiative — Strategic Transition from Rental to Developing our own properties — as a bold response to the problem.
According to him, Cabinet has already approved the plan, with a transaction advisor appointed, standard designs prepared, and financing arrangements underway.
“And that is why cabinet has promptly approved the STRIDE initiative. And STRIDE refers to the strategic transition from rental to developing our own properties. I’ve tasked the ministers for foreign affairs and finance to work urgently to resolve this longstanding challenge,” the President added.
The move forms part of the Reset Agenda’s focus on fiscal prudence, national pride, and sustainable development.
