The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has cited Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin for contempt of Parliament after he reportedly attended a sitting of the ECOWAS Parliament in Nigeria despite a resolution of the House removing him from Ghana’s delegation.
The Bawku Central MP explained that the House had replaced Afenyo-Markin with his deputy, Patricia Appiagyei, who later rejected her inclusion. According to Ayariga, the ECOWAS Parliament initially refused to swear in Ghana’s delegation due to Afenyo-Markin’s removal, and it required a threat of Ghana’s withdrawal from ECOWAS before the delegation was finally sworn in.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Ayariga urged that Afenyo-Markin be referred to the privileges committee and face sanctions if found guilty.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, however, did not immediately refer the matter to the committee, saying he would take a day to consider the application and deliver his verdict tomorrow, Wednesday, November 12.
