Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused President John Mahama of attempting to “pack the courts”.
Speaking in a press briefing, the minority leader warned that the minority would resist what he termed an “undemocratic agenda” by the current administration to tilt the balance of the judiciary in its favour.
“What President Mahama is doing is court-packing, a clear attempt to undermine judicial independence. We, in the minority, will not sit idly by. We will stand firmly against it,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
Though he did not provide specific names, the Minority Leader suggested that recent judicial appointments and pending nominations point to a pattern of political interference.
He further cautioned that the sanctity of the judiciary must not be sacrificed for short-term political advantage, insisting that Ghana’s democracy thrives on a balanced and impartial legal system.
