President John Dramani Mahama says government will work with the private sector to mobilise about US$2 billion every year for investments in sectors with the potential to create jobs on a large scale.
The initiative will cover nine strategic sectors and is expected to form part of the government’s 2027 budget priorities.
President Mahama announced the plan during a meeting with Ahafo traditional leaders, where he outlined measures being pursued to expand employment and economic opportunities.
“We want to make about $2 billion available every year in key sectors that can create jobs, but it will be driven mostly by the private sector,” he explained.
The President said agriculture would occupy a central position in the programme, particularly oil palm and poultry production.
He argued that increasing local production in these areas could reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported products.
“There’s no reason why we should be importing vegetable cooking oil when we have the land to produce the oil palm ourselves,” he said.
Mahama called on chiefs to provide land for commercial agricultural projects and participate in the ventures.
He also announced a plan to establish 24-hour markets in all 261 districts, which he said would support farmers by providing ready markets for their produce while boosting local commerce.
The President said the job-creation programme would complement ongoing efforts to improve the economy and expand infrastructure.
In Ahafo, government is also pursuing road projects under the Big Push programme and has committed to establishing a tertiary institution and regional hospital in the region.
