A man who falsely claimed to be Dr. Patrick Nelson Ayittey, a worker at the Vice President of Ghana’s Office and a Captain in the Ghana Armed Forces, has been arrested by police in Cape Coast for allegedly defrauding people with promises of Canadian visas and work permits.

According to police, the suspect also claimed affiliations with the Canadian Embassy and collected GHS 5,325 and GHS 8,200 from victims but failed to deliver on his promises. Efforts to recover the money were unsuccessful.

Briefing the media, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit of the Central Regional Police Command said.

“The Abura Police Station in Cape Coast received a report that between December 2025 and January 2026, one Dr. Patrick Nelson Ayittey, who claimed to be a worker at the Vice President’s Office, a Captain in the Ghana Armed Forces and also had affiliations with the Canadian Embassy, had collected GHS 5,325 and GHS 8,200 respectively from victims under the pretext of securing them Canadian Visas and work permits but had failed and all efforts to refund the money have been unsuccessful.”

He added, “Police Intelligence led to the suspect’s arrest in his hideout at Abura, Cape Coast.”

A search at the suspect’s residence uncovered about 10 Ghanaian passports, school certificates, birth certificates, and Ghana Cards.

Police investigations further revealed that the suspect, whose real name is Patrick Nii Torto, is not a member of the Ghana Armed Forces, does not work at the Vice President’s Office, has no ties with the Canadian Embassy, and is not a medical doctor nor holds a doctorate degree.

Patrick Nii Torto was arraigned before the Cape Coast Circuit Court, presided over by Her Worship Nana Aba Quiaba Nunoo. After the proceedings, he was remanded into police custody to assist with investigations into other similar cases. He is expected to reappear in court on March 3, 2026.

The Central Regional Police Command has urged anyone who may have been defrauded by him, or who has information about the suspect, to contact the command on 18555 or 191.
