Minority questions the basis for gov’t signing two power purchase agreements

The Minority in Parliament is accusing the government of deceit in the excess capacity claims against the Mahama administration.

Government officials including Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta after assuming office accused the NDC of saddling the country with needless Power Purchase Agreements resulting in huge debts.

The government went ahead to terminate some of the agreements which have resulted in judgment debts such as the $170 million GPGC one.

Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh however at a media engagement announced the government has entered into two agreements for supply of 750MW of electricity.

Speaking to the media in parliament deputy minority leader Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah argued the development means the country had no excess capacity as claimed by officials of the Nana Addo administration.

“We want to state it here clearly that it is vindication by the NDC government. All the power plants that were brought over 1000MW were the result of the stability we’ve seen in the last seven years.

“So the people of Ghana must now begin to ask the NPP what has happened, ask them tough questions. In fact we should even ask them that these PPA’s that have been signed, are they take or pay agreements. Because this is the truth, nobody in his right mind would come and invest over five hundred million where he knows that he is producing the power to a country where the ultimate off-taker is ECG which is in debt. You think he won’t have a guarantee to collect his money?” Mr. Buah stated.

He continued: “So why are they not signing PPAs that are take of pay? I bring you all this for you to know this government has serious credibility issues. They talk from both sides of their mouths.”
