A majority of Ghanaians believe illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, has not worsened under the current administration, according to the latest National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics.
The survey indicates that 47% of respondents reject claims that galamsey has deteriorated, while 37% believe it has worsened and 16% said they were unsure.
Even in mining-affected areas, 43% of voters feel the galamsey situation has not worsened, compared to 37% who disagree, showing that communities most affected by illegal mining remain divided but not overwhelmingly pessimistic.
The poll also assessed public views on government enforcement efforts, with 56% of respondents saying authorities are doing enough to curb the menace, 31% disagreeing, and 13% unsure.
Analysts note that the results point to growing public confidence in recent interventions, while also underscoring the need for continued transparency and sustained action to tackle environmental degradation, water pollution, and other impacts of illegal mining.
