Residents in the New Zango community in the Asokore Mampong Municipality can now enjoy potable water with the construction of the first mechanized water system in the town.
Until this intervention, residents had to travel distances to adjoining suburbs like Akwetia Line and Aboabo, to fetch water for domestic and economic use with its attendant health risk of consuming unwholesome water.
The intervention was executed by the SOS Villages under its No Business as Usual Project, funded by the European Union.
Country Director of SOS Villages Ghana, Alexander Mark Kekula indicated that the project is part of a broader support system to solve the sanitation challenges of the New Zango area while protecting them from water borne diseases.
He pointed out, “We identified that waterborne diseases are prevalent among community members so we had to quickly move in to provide clean water they can drink, water they can cook with and take their bath. This is very essential for the development of children and for the growth of the community.”
Municipal Director of Works with the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly Eric Owusu assured that an operational and maintenance plan will be drawn to ensure that such projects remain relevant to the water needs of the municipality.
“In Asokore Mampong water coverage is only 60% and we know that this project can last the residents for a long time so we are coming up with an operational and maintenance plan so that it can last for many years,” he averred.
Programs Manager for the NBU Project Esther Martey told Ultimate News her outfit is working out a Public Private Partnership arrangement to secure revenues to sustain the running cost of the water system.
The project forms part of a three part social intervention program comprising the mechanized Bore hole, the renovation of a school at Akurem and a Foot bridge to ease the menace of pedestrian knockdowns between Sewaba and Asokore Mampong.
