The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed apprehension over discrepancies in the voter’s register, calling for a forensic audit and parliamentary investigation into the matter.
In an interview on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Mr. Philemon Laar, a legal practitioner and member of the NDC Communications team, “It’s not the case that the NDC is fighting the EC. It is the people of Ghana who have found logical, valid reasons why the EC so far has not lived up to expectations.”
Mr. Laar highlighted that the Electoral Commission’s (EC) credibility is at stake, asserting the appointment of politically exposed persons to the commission.
“If you appoint a politically exposed person to go and be one of the commissioners of the electoral commission, that alone is enough basis for anyone to doubt the credibility of the EC”, he stated.
The NDC has correlated several infractions, including names missing from the register, transfers without consent, and flagging of unqualified voters. Mr. Laar emphasized that “there are several people who have registered at specific polling stations and when they go back there, their names are not on the register.”
The party is urging the EC to meet with stakeholders to ensure the credibility of the upcoming election. Laar stated that “there is no peace without justice” and called on major stakeholders, including the Peace Council, Christian Council, and civil society, to speak out on the matter.
