The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has assured the people of Manya Krobo that the next NDC government will thoroughly investigate the deadly clashes between residents and security forces in 2019.
The incident, which stemmed from protests against alleged overbilling and mass disconnection by the Power Distribution Services (PDS), resulted in the death of 24-year-old Thomas Partey and multiple injuries, including the amputation of a Ruth Makathar, an 18-year-old girl’s leg.
Addressing residents of Agormanya during a five-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Asiedu Nketia expressed the party’s commitment to ensuring justice.
“We are promising you that, when the NDC assumes power, anyone who has committed a crime will be investigated and punished.
“We will also compensate the victims and the families who lost their relatives so they can take care of their children in school”, he added.
The clashes occurred after residents of Lower Manya Krobo protested against what they described as overbilling by PDS, which had taken over operations from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The situation escalated when security forces were deployed to the area, leading to violent confrontations. Thomas Partey was shot dead during the chaos, and seven others were injured, including Ruth Makathar, an 18-year-old student Junior High School leaver who was shot in both legs.
Despite promises by then-Energy Minister Peter Amewu to establish a committee to investigate the incident, no action was taken.
Asiedu Nketia criticized the government for its handling of the situation, saying, “In the Krobo area, just a misunderstanding over ECG meters led to the deployment of security forces who shot and killed residents indiscriminately. This could have been resolved peacefully.”
The NDC chairman vowed that under an NDC administration, those responsible for the violence and killings would face justice, and the affected families would receive the compensation they deserve.
