The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a trailblazer whose impact on women’s empowerment and Ghana’s political history remains indelible.
In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, dated Thursday, October 23, 2025, the NDC extended its condolences to the Rawlings family, acknowledging Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings’ lifelong commitment to advancing the welfare of women and children through the 31st December Women’s Movement.
The party described her as one of its founding pillars whose contribution helped shape the ideals and identity of the NDC.
Mr. Kwetey recalled that on June 22, 2025 — the birthday of the party’s founder, Jerry John Rawlings — the NDC formally recognized Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings as the “Founding Mother” of the party, reaffirming her pivotal role in its history.
“As one of the founding pillars of the NDC, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings played an instrumental role in shaping the ideals and identity of our great party. Despite the ebbs and flows that led to her founding another party, her place in the story of the NDC will always remain significant,” the statement read.
The NDC added that it takes solace in the fact that this recognition was made during her lifetime, underscoring the party’s enduring respect and gratitude for her contributions.
Born on November 17, 1948, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a pioneering advocate for women’s rights and social inclusion. Through the 31st December Women’s Movement, founded in 1982, she empowered thousands of Ghanaian women through education, skills training, and entrepreneurship support.
Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings was also a key figure in Ghana’s political landscape, serving as First Lady during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and later the Fourth Republic under President Jerry John Rawlings.
The NDC extended its deepest condolences to her children and family, praying for strength and comfort during this period of mourning.
On behalf of the National Democratic Congress, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children and loved ones. We share in their grief and pray for strength and comfort in this difficult period. May the soul of Mrs. Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital aged 76.
