Businessman Nana Kwame Bediako’s New Force political movement, is rendering an apology over an incident during which one of the leader’s security detail punched a member of the public in the stomach.
In a video widely circulated on social media on Saturday, an altercation ensued at the entrance of a venue where Mr. Bediako was attending a funeral.
During the scuffle to keep the encroaching crowd at bay, a security detail got into a brawl with another man, resulting in an unprovoked punch in the gut.
The victim doubled over, clutching his stomach as if he were trying to hold the pain in place.
The dastard attack has been roundly condemned on social media as being high-handed.
In a statement apologizing for the act, the New Force admitted the victim was not in the position to cause harm. It condemned the action, saying no person deserved such treatment in a democracy.
“We are deeply saddened and disturbed by a recent incident captured on video in which a member of the security team assigned to our presidential candidate was seen physically assaulting a supporter who was merely attempting to speak with the candidate. The individual in question was unarmed, posed no threat, and deserved nothing but dignity and respect.
“We extend our sincerest apologies to the victim and their family, and to all Ghanaians who rightly expect better conduct from those associated with our movement. No individual, supporter or otherwise should ever be subjected to violence, especially in a democratic environment where engagement and expression are to be protected,” the statement written by the movement’s General Secretary, Charles Yomokpe, read in part.
The release pledged to ensure that the perpetrator is held fully accountable under the law and internal disciplinary processes”.
