The Government has stated that no public official, including the Chief Justice, is above the laws of Ghana, in response to comments made by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo during a press engagement earlier on the same day.
Speaking at an emergency press briefing on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said that every public officer is subject to the Constitution and Ghanaian law, regardless of the sensitivity of their position.
“We cannot have a sacred cow mentality in the way that we handle state affairs. Every single public official from the President to the Speaker to the Chief Justice to Supreme Court Judges to Ministers to all public office holders are bound by the provisions of Ghanaian law,” he stated.

Quoting the former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Kwakye Ofosu added
“When you join the game, you play by the rules.”
He emphasised that the President acted strictly in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution in handling the petitions related to the Chief Justice, and that it would be unconstitutional for the President to ignore such petitions.
“No public official is allowed to raise he or herself above the laws of Ghana. It does not matter how sensitive your position is,” he said.
He added that once the law dictates that a process must be followed in the case of alleged misconduct, that process must be respected by all.
