The National Peace Council (NPC), in partnership with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other collaborators in the Election Situation Room, has raised alarm over escalating incidents of electoral violence during the December 7 polls.
In a statement addressing a violent episode in the Awutu Senya East constituency, the NPC denounced a shooting that claimed one life and left another individual injured. Stressing the sanctity of human life, the Council declared, “The NPC once again decries the killing and injuring of any persons during the elections.”
Expressing condolences to the affected families and the local community in Awutu Senya East, the Peace Council extended its sympathies to others similarly impacted by electoral violence. It urged political stakeholders to show restraint and avoid using firearms to settle disputes, highlighting the need for peaceful conflict resolution methods.
The NPC assured the public of its proactive efforts to engage relevant stakeholders in addressing the Awutu Senya East incident and preventing further occurrences. While investigations continue, the Council called on the people of Awutu Senya East and Ghanaians at large to remain calm and place their trust in security agencies to manage the situation effectively.
Reaffirming its dedication to peace, the NPC and its partners stressed their commitment to ensuring a violence-free electoral process. The Council appealed to all citizens to uphold democratic values and collectively work towards maintaining harmony during this critical period.
