The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has barred its deputy General Secretary Nana Obiri Boahen from speaking on behalf of it.
The decision follows the National Steering Committee meeting of the party Wednesday March 7 to consider among other issues Mr. Boahen’s leaked tape and related matters.
“The steering committee, after listening to him [Nana Obiri Boahen] and taken cognizance of his public apology for the false allegations he had made against the “Flagstaff House” and the party leadership, has referred his conduct to the party’s disciplinary committee in accordance with Article 4 of the party constitution,” said a statement signed by John Boadu NPP’s acting General Secretary.
“The committee has further instructed the Deputy General Secretary, Nana Obiri Boahen to refrain from speaking to the media in any official capacity until his issues with the disciplinary committee have been fully resolved,” it added.
The embattled Deputy General Secretary over the weekend rendered an unqualified apology to President Nana Akufo-Addo and the party for claiming that the Presidency gave the latter GH¢50 billion to conduct its 2017 National Annual Delegates’ Conference in Cape Coast.
The ruling party in August 2017 held the Conference where various proposals were made for amendments to the party’s constitution.
In a leaked secretly recorded tape, Nana Obiri Boahen is heard lamenting about how he was given a paltry GH¢5,000 as a member of the resolution committee out of the GH¢50 billion.
“Respectfully, I am by this letter expressing my profound apology to the President, the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, the Steering Committee, the National Executives Committee, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party and every member of the New Patriotic Party for my indiscretion,” wrote Mr. Boahen in a letter of apology.
The NPP has since in a statement dismissed the claims as a “palpable falsehood.”
