The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Eastern Regional Executive Committee has officially announced the demise of the Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The news has plunged his constituency, party, and the nation into mourning.
In a statement, the NPP described Mr. Kumi’s death as sudden and untimely, noting that it has left the party, the people of Akwatia, and the nation in shock.
“Hon. Kumi was a dedicated public servant whose commitment to the development of Akwatia and the ideals of the NPP was unwavering. We extend our deepest condolences to his immediate family, the chiefs and people of the Akwatia Constituency, and the entire NPP fraternity across the country,” the statement read.
The party extended its condolences to Mr. Kumi’s family, the chiefs and people of Akwatia, and the NPP fraternity nationwide.
Mr. Kumi’s short political career had been marred by controversy following the 2024 general elections.
After securing a narrow victory over his closest rival, Henry Boakye-Yiadom of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), his election was legally challenged, leading to a court injunction issued on January 3, 2025, barring his swearing-in.
Despite the injunction, Mr. Kumi was sworn into Parliament on January 7, 2025, prompting contempt proceedings.
His continued absence from court during the hearings led to the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest earlier today by Justice Senyo Amedahe.
The legal battle stemmed from allegations of irregularities in the Akwatia parliamentary elections, which Mr. Boakye-Yiadom argued undermined the legitimacy of the results.
While Mr. Kumi’s legal team fought to overturn the injunction, citing procedural irregularities, the court rejected their arguments, upholding the injunction and allowing the contempt proceedings to proceed.
