The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to apologise to President John Dramani Mahama over what they deem as offensive comments made by the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Ahead of the 2024 elections, Wontumi made several derogatory remarks about President Mahama, which circulated widely on social media.
Many of these comments have been criticised by Ghanaians, including some party stalwarts, as inappropriate and inflammatory.
Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, speaking on Channel One TV on Tuesday, June 10, revealed the planned apology.
According to him, some senior members of the party are quietly working behind the scenes to apologise to the President.

Dr. Afriyie explained that the initiative is not merely about political damage control but also about demonstrating humility and responsibility within the party ranks.
He also hinted that some party insiders believe the intense legal pressure on Wontumi may have deeper political undertones.
Dr. Ayew Afriyie stated, “For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama. Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line.”
