Yaw Opoku Mensah, spokesperson for the former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to honour the legacy of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi by retaining the Akwatia parliamentary seat.
Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Star 103.5 FM on Tuesday, July 8, Mensah stressed that the party has a moral responsibility to preserve the political path Kumi began before his untimely passing.
“If there’s anything we can do to dignify his stay in Parliament… it is our duty as a political party to ensure that we do maintain that legacy by winning the seat for the NPP — not just for 2024, but beyond 2028 as well,” he stated.
Mensah described Kumi’s contributions in Parliament as meaningful and full of promise, adding that his brief tenure had already begun to make a lasting impact.
His remarks formed part of a series of tributes shared during the programme, including one from former Akwatia MP Baba Jamal, who mourned the late legislator as a “promising star.”
Ernest Kumi, popularly known as the “Akwatia Star Boy,” reportedly died on Monday, July 7, from a suspected heart attack. Although family sources have cited cardiac complications, an official cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
His passing comes at a sensitive time, as he was embroiled in a legal challenge to his December 2024 election victory.
Kumi was serving his first term in Parliament, having secured the Akwatia seat in what was considered a critical win for the NPP in the Eastern Region.
