Former Asante-Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi has slammed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primaries before addressing the party’s internal challenges, describing the move as unconstitutional.
His remarks come after the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council announced on Tuesday, June 17, that the NPP will elect its next flagbearer on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Several party members and political observers have raised concerns over the timing, insisting the party must first resolve its internal issues before setting a date for the presidential contest.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, July 4, Mr. Appiah-Kubi criticised the decision, arguing that the party is disregarding its own constitution.
“In any case, let me look at the propriety of the proposal. We have a constitution that makes the road map as to what happens within the party. We cannot do anything contrary to what the constitution prescribes for us. So for now what we can do is to follow the direction of the constitution,” he stated.
According to him, while the party leadership has some flexibility to adjust timelines, the processes outlined in the constitution must be strictly followed.
“In the direction of the constitution we have always started from the police stations and constituencies, the regional, the national and the like. And that is the prescription in this present constitution that we have. Now, how can we implement a program that is contrary to the prescription in the constitution? The timelines, yes, will be varied. But the processes within the constitution, how are we going to be unconstitutional within the constitution?,” he added.
The upcoming presidential contest is expected to be fiercely competitive, as the NPP seeks to rebuild after its 2024 electoral defeat.
Notable figures who have declared their intention to run include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.
