The Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, has attributed his triumph in the September 2 by-election to what he calls a clear, hopeful, and development-driven message to the people.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, September 4, Mr. Baidoo argued that while his New Patriotic Party (NPP) opponent, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, ran a campaign centered on sympathy, his own strategy was anchored on issues that resonated with voters.
“It was the message. We went with the message of hope and development, we didn’t mention anybody’s name, we didn’t attack anybody but they chose to do otherwise. They spent time attacking, insulting and doing all kind of things.
The only message they had beyond the attack, and everything was the fact that an MP who is from their political party has passed away in a very sad manner, that was their message so they should vote for this gentleman just because he is from the same party with the deceased MP,” he said.
The by-election became necessary following the death of the sitting MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in July.
Official results from the Electoral Commission confirmed earlier projections by Global Info Analytics, which had tipped the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for victory.
Mr. Baidoo secured 18,199 votes, representing 54.3 percent, to defeat the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu, who polled 15,235 votes, or 45.4 percent.
Patrick Owusu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) garnered 82 votes. In all, 33,819 valid votes were cast, with 303 ballots rejected.
