The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed strong opposition to the recent inauguration of the Scholarship Authority Board, citing the complete absence of student representation.
In a statement on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the union argued that students, as the primary beneficiaries of scholarships, are central to decision-making and governance.
“Students are not incidental stakeholders within the scholarship framework; they are its core purpose,” the statement said, stressing that scholarships are designed to promote equity, expand access to education, and support the academic futures of vulnerable students.
NUGS warned that a board operating without student input risks being detached from the realities of beneficiaries, undermining fairness, transparency, and accountability.
The union emphasized that “effective public administration is founded on inclusivity, stakeholder participation, transparency, and responsiveness,” principles it believes are essential to the board’s credibility.
The union called for urgent engagement between government authorities, the Scholarship Authority, and NUGS to rectify the situation.
It also urged the President and Minister of Education to reconstitute the board to include meaningful student representation and amend the Scholarship Authority Act to explicitly guarantee such representation.
