A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Lawratu Musah Saaka, has raised questions about whether former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta must be physically present in Ghana for ongoing investigations into his tenure.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Wednesday, Saaka stressed that while public officials must be held accountable, accountability should not be tied solely to being in the country, especially considering Ofori-Atta’s health challenges.
“I mean anybody who has served this country must be accountable to us,” she said. “But one of the things that has come up strongly is his ill health. He had to go under surgery and all that.”
She added that Ofori-Atta remains answerable to Ghanaians for his time in office, but questioned the legal necessity of his return for investigations by the Attorney-General’s Department.
“Definitely he is accountable to the people that he served,” Saaka noted. “But then, do we really need him here if the Attorney-General’s office is really committed to prosecuting this issue?”
Saaka argued that legal frameworks should allow the process to continue without making Ofori-Atta’s presence in the country a prerequisite.
“Do they necessarily need him in this country?” she asked, emphasizing that accountability should be rooted in due process rather than public spectacle.
