The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has stated the number of child pedestrian deaths has reduced by more than 30 percent since the introduction of lollipop stands.
The Commission said there has been a consistent decline in the number of deaths over the past four years. As part of measures to reduce it further, OmniBank has presented 25 pair of lollipop stands to the NRSC.
The move which is an annual gesture from the bank was at a cost of Gh¢50, 000.
It will be located at strategic areas in the Greater Accra region to aid school children cross the road safely.
Speaking to Starr Business the Managing Director of OmniBank, Philip Oti Mensah, said they will go further to partner the commission to educate commercial drivers on measures to stay safe on the road.
“Generally, we would like to reduce the number of accidents on the road but particularly we are more concerned about inner city accidents.
“These small accidents are avoidable; we would like to partner with them to train Taxi drivers and Trotro drivers in the inner city so that these accidents are avoided,” Mr. Mensah said.
The World Bank in the next three years will provide 850 lollipop stands to be distributed across the country.
