Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has revealed that Derrick Kohn is yet to receive FIFA clearance to feature in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8.
Kohn, who was born in Germany, received his first Ghana call-up for the September doubleheader against Chad and Mali.
However, he was sidelined for Thursday’s 1-1 draw in N’Djamena after documentation delays prevented his eligibility.
“We had a lot of difficulties in Chad, and one of them was Derek’s situation. We didn’t get the FIFA approval. Up to now, it hasn’t come through, but I’m hopeful it will arrive by tomorrow morning,” Addo explained.
The coach emphasized that his player selections are based solely on ability rather than where players are raised or developed.
“We are always open to any player of Ghanaian descent. For me, it’s not about whether they are local, born abroad, or in the diaspora it’s about quality. In the end, I have to choose the best,” he said.
Kohn, 26, signed for Bundesliga side Union Berlin this summer after a strong season with Galatasaray in Turkey. Seen as a long-term solution at left-back, his potential debut remains dependent on the green light from FIFA.
