The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC has confirmed that its planned industrial action over the deplorable Pokuase–Nsawam road will escalate into a nationwide strike if government fails to act immediately.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, August 18, the Union’s Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, stressed that contractors must return to site by Wednesday, August 20, or all commercial transport operators across the country will ground their vehicles starting Thursday, August 21.
“So, if by the close of Wednesday, if no contractor has been sent to the site to, commence work, then it means the next day 21st Thursday, we are not talking about those that applies. We are talking about nationwide,” Amoah cautioned.
“It’s a nationwide strike. We’re not talking about just a day till we see a contractor at the site working.”
The GPRTU, together with the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and other transport unions, had earlier issued a one-week ultimatum to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, citing the road’s poor state, which they say has endangered commuters, increased operational costs, and shortened vehicle lifespans.
They recalled that despite assurances from the Roads Minister to fix the highway within six weeks, nothing has been done.
The groups say the strike will continue indefinitely until concrete work begins, urging all drivers, commuters, and residents to join the nationwide protest as a civic duty to pressure government into action.
