The Ghana Police Service has arrested Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, for offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.
In a statement dated Monday, September 8, 2025, the Police confirmed that the outspoken Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was taken into custody and will be put before court. Details of the conduct leading to the arrest were not immediately disclosed.
Abronye is a familiar figure in Ghanaian politics, well known for his sharp political commentary and controversial public statements. In recent years, he has been entangled in multiple legal disputes.
In February 2025, he was summoned by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) after alleging that former President John Dramani Mahama had hoarded GH₵550 million meant for dismissed government appointees.
Later, in July 2025, he was sued for defamation by the Acting CEO of the Forestry Commission, who sought GH₵20 million in damages after Abronye accused him of forgery and improper sales of forest reserves.
Adding a new twist to the unfolding case, Abronye had applied for political asylum just days before his arrest.
In a letter dated September 5, 2025, he petitioned several foreign embassies, including those of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as United Nations agencies.
In the applications, he cited political persecution, threats to his life, and unlawful arrests as reasons for seeking protection abroad. Civil society actors, including Franklin Cudjoe of IMANI Africa, have since called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the alleged threats detailed in his asylum plea.
He is currently in custody and will be put before court.
