Police brutality: 20-year-old victim narrates horrific ordeal, cries for justice

A Twenty-year-old lady, Judith Kumah’s life was forever changed when she was arrested and interrogated by Superintendent Clement Suputor, a police officer who would later sever part of her ear.

The incident occurred on February 29, this year during an investigation into a robbery case, in which Judith was falsely accused and was later acquitted by a Court of competent jurisdiction.

Despite the trauma she endured, Judith, who was pregnant at the time, found solace when her story went viral, sparking public outcry and prompting the Ghana Police Service to assure her of justice.

However, Judith’s hopes for accountability seem to be dwindling.

Judith Kumah shared her ordeal with GHOne TV’s Awisi Dede Djangay earlier in March this year after her arrest and interrogation for an alleged involvement in a robbery.

The Ghana Police Service then reacted after Judith’s story went viral, assuring her and the family of assisting in seeking justice to the latter

Five months down the line, Supt. Suputor, the officer responsible for Judith’s abuse, has been promoted to the Tema Regional Command, despite assurances of a potential indictment.

This development has left Judith, now seven months pregnant, fearing that justice may never be served.

“I would want for him (Police Officer) to be brought before the court as I was brought before the court, and for him to be dealt with, but then he has been promoted,” she lamented.

“He was at Tema community 8 police station, but now promoted to the regionals headquarters at Tema.

“He (Police Officer) is there and he’s working. I’ve seen him a couple of times,” she said.

Judith’s legal representative, Andrew Khartey, who took her case Pro Bono, vows to sue the Ghana Police Service and demand compensation for his client, decrying how the service has failed the young woman.

“We intend to sue the police and seek compensation for all the physical, emotional mental torture that she has been subjected to.”

As Judith (victim) prepares to welcome her baby, she faces the daunting task of providing for her child while grappling with the psychological trauma of her ordeal.

Her story serves as a stark reminder of the need for police accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Judith’s case continues to spark outrage, with many demanding justice for the young woman who has suffered so much.

Will her voice be heard, or will she become another statistic in the long history of police brutality and injustice? Only time will tell.
