The Ghana Police Service has rescheduled the full implementation of its automated traffic law enforcement programme, TRAFFITECH-GH, from 1 October to 1 November 2026.
The decision gives the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) additional time to intensify public education and engagement with key stakeholders.
ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, told Starr News the extra period—described as roughly 10 to 30 days—is necessary because many offences that previously required court appearances will now attract automated fines.
Motorists will generally have 14 days to respond to an Electronic Notice of Violation and, where they choose, may still contest the matter in court.
“We need to, as it were, give ourselves a little chance,” ACP Obeng said.
He explained that the extension will enable the Service to reach vehicle owners, corporate entities, professional bodies, vehicle importers, transport unions, associations, societies and cooperatives to secure their understanding and support.
He noted that the ongoing issuance of caution notices is already sensitising large numbers of road users, particularly vehicle owners.
Despite installed capacity and trained personnel, the police believe broader engagement through the media and other channels remains essential as the Service moves toward the new start date.
“Though we have installed capacities, though we have trained our personnel, though the ongoing issuance of caution notices are taking the toll on and sensitising the millions at large, particularly vehicular owners, we think that through the media and through other sources of engagement we will explore all so that as we gravitate towards 1st November,” he said.
ACP Obeng added that the Ghana Police Service is delivering the service to the public that owns it and has called the Service to duty under the new mandate.
TRAFFITECH-GH uses cameras, sensors and other devices to detect selected traffic offences, transmit evidence for validation, and issue electronic notices to registered vehicle owners.
The programme forms part of efforts to improve compliance with road traffic laws, reduce indiscipline and enhance road safety. Full enforcement is now set to begin on 1 November 2026.
