Probe Senyo Hosi’s UG certificates – GRASAG

The University of Ghana Chapter of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has called on the management of the University to probe the certificates of Senyo Hosi.

The call comes after Hosi, who’s the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution, described the University of Ghana as the school for the mediocre.

Hosi in a tirade at a forum to mark the 70th anniversary of the school berated the University for producing substandard graduates who pay teaching assistants do their research works for them.

“I have three degrees; all from the University of Ghana. I won’t hire anybody [from UG], it’s simple. And it’s a matter of substance: what do you churn out? You are churning out people with degrees, not people with an education, not people with skills on how to live; that is the problem.

“And respectfully, the old men running this school, they are too many, get them out. I beg you; you guys are not doing anything that is relevant for the future and you won’t get people wanting to employ the people out of this place.

“Your MBA students, plenty of them I won’t hire, your classmates, I won’t hire. I was also in that school. How many TA [Teaching Assistants] haven’t written people’s thesis?

Speaking on Starr Midday News President of GRASAG University Chris Atadika said Hosi’s statements were rude and unfortunate and that the acquisition of his certificates must be investigated after questioning its credibility.

“His claims of teaching assistance doing research work for students; there are no facts to prove that. Maybe he got his certificate through that. According to the statues of the University…certificates of such students must be revoked.  Investigations must go into how he acquired his certificates,” Atadika said.

A lecturer at the University Professor Ransford Gyampo called on Hosi to apologise over his outburst aimed at lecturers and management of the University of Ghana.

According to him, the atmosphere the businessperson chose to address his concerns about the university was inappropriate.

“The University of Ghana may have its own challenges but that doesn’t for Senyo to talk about his alma mater in that manner is wrong. Senyo Hosi wasn’t fair with his comments at all and I think he must apologise,” he told Morning Starr host Francis Abban Wednesday.

Accomplished academician Professor Stephen Adei waded in the controversy regarding Hosi’s attack on the University liking it to tantrums of a two-year-old kid.

He said claims by Hosi that older folks should be removed from the university is complete “nonsense”.

“This is a hyperbolic way of thinking. I don’t think I can align myself with what he is saying. The point about the old men is absolute nonsense. World universities all over have professors who are old and have no retirement age. And that is the right to do.

“I have always said we should distinguish the business administration of the university from the academic administration,” he said.
