Promoting STEM education – Tullow Ghana supports 2018 Sci-Tech fair

In line with its commitment to build capacity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, Tullow Ghana Limited (TGL) sponsored this year’s Science and Technology Fair as platinum sponsors as part of the 2018 edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz festival (NSMQ).

The two-day programme, which was held on June 8 and 9, 2018 at the Athletic Oval of the University of Ghana, Legon, provided participating schools the opportunity to use science projects to demonstrate some of the concepts they have studied in school. In all, students from 35 senior high schools (SHS) exhibited their projects, including Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC), Apam SHS, Nandom SHS, St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, St. Francis Xavier SHS, Bawku SHS, Wa SHS, Opoku Ware School, Sekyeredumase SHS and St. Monica’s SHS.

Some Junior High School (JHS) and Primary school pupils also participated with impressive projects. These included St. Kizito RC JHS, Tema Community 8. No.1 JHS and Martyrs of Uganda JHS, with the youngest exhibitors being class six pupils from Two Roses International School.

As platinum sponsors, TGL also put up an exhibition booth to give students first-hand experience of the oil and gas industry and Tullow’s operations. Present at the TGL booth were Ghanaian Geoscientists and Engineers who engaged with and educated students on the oil and gas life cycle — from formation to production. The display included crude oil samples and a 3D model of a Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The TGL booth was an excitement for the students, teachers and members of the general public attending the Fair, with several of the students expressing interest in engineering and related fields as possible career choices.

As the NSMQ festival progresses, students from participating schools that progress to the semi-finals stage will become eligible to tour Tullow Ghana facilities.

Tullow Ghana’s long term vision is to support the development of world class Ghanaian professionals for the development of Ghana’s growing oil and gas sector and other industries. The company’s socio-economic investments have therefore been focused on STEM education from the basic to tertiary level. It is for this reason that TGL is supporting the NSMQ festival.
