Pressure group, Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement-Africa (PTAAM-Africa) has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Jean Mensa, and her deputies.
In their petition, PTAAM-Africa accused the EC leadership of causing significant financial loss to the state, fostering a constitutional crisis, and engaging in misconduct and abuse of public office. The group’s grievance stems from the controversial procurement of new biometric voter devices and the compilation of a new voter register ahead of the 2020 general elections.
According to the petitioners, this expenditure was entirely unnecessary, as the existing 2016 voter register and biometric devices were reliable and fit for purpose.
The President of PTAAM-Africa, Ebenezer K. Havor, minced no words in his call for accountability:
“The leadership of the Electoral Commission must go. Their actions demonstrate a clear bias and have eroded public trust in an institution meant to safeguard our democracy.”
This development follows a previous petition seeking the dismissal of Madam Mensa and her deputies, which was later withdrawn by the petitioners, citing a lack of interest or urgency in pursuing justice. However, PTAAM-Africa believes the matter remains critical to Ghana’s democratic integrity.
The group has urged President Mahama to take decisive action to restore confidence in the Electoral Commission and ensure fairness in future elections.
