The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) has announced plans for a nationwide strike and peaceful protest on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, over a year-long delay in the payment of salaries and benefits.
In a notice addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, the Union, through its General Secretary, Benjamin Essuman, said the industrial action had become inevitable after 12 months of unpaid wages dating back to October 2024.
Union leaders warned that the prolonged salary arrears have left many workers in crisis, citing rising cases of family breakups, health complications such as strokes, and children forced out of school due to financial strain.
Despite multiple appeals to the Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities, the RWU said no steps had been taken to resolve the matter through negotiation or arbitration as required under Ghana’s Labour Act.
“By Monday, 22nd September 2025, if no concrete measures are taken by the Ministry of Transport to address these issues, we shall proceed to act under Sections 160 and 171 of the Labour Act effective 30th September 2025,” the Union declared.
The planned demonstration will draw railway workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa.
Protesters are expected to march from the Ministry of Transport to Parliament to submit a petition, before continuing to the Ghana Railway Development Authority and concluding at the TUC-Ghana headquarters.
The Union assured the Ghana Police Service that the demonstration would be peaceful and called for security support to protect participants and the public.
Copies of the strike notice have also been sent to key state institutions, including the Office of the Chief of Staff, Parliament, the National Labour Commission, the Ministry of Labour, and the Ghana Railway Company Limited.
