South Africa’s Rand Refinery has joined the African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026 (AMPF–MiM 2026) as a Silver Plus Sponsor, reinforcing efforts to expand gold refining capacity, promote local value addition and formalise artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) across Africa.
The event is scheduled for October 19–21, 2026, at the Destiny Arena in Accra, Ghana, under the theme “One Continent. One Voice on Minerals. Aligning Africa’s Mineral Wealth Future.”
The forum is expected to bring together mining ministers, policymakers, private-sector leaders and global investors to discuss strategies for strengthening Africa’s mineral sector and increasing the value retained from its natural resources.
Rand Refinery, described as the world’s largest integrated single-site precious metals refining and smelting complex, will contribute its expertise in downstream processing and regional cooperation to discussions at the forum.
The partnership comes amid growing demand for locally refined gold, stronger national bullion reserves and greater control by African countries over their mineral wealth.
Despite having close to 35 gold-producing nations and an artisanal and small-scale mining sector responsible for nearly half of the continent’s gold output, African countries continue to face challenges, including fragmented regulations, inadequate infrastructure and limited access to accredited refining facilities.
AMPF–MiM 2026 will explore ways to address these challenges through regional cooperation, responsible sourcing, infrastructure development, ASM formalisation and investment in downstream processing.
Rand Refinery is already working to strengthen regional refining capacity through its technical, operational and commercial partnership model, collaborating with central banks, governments and regional refiners to establish internationally accredited capabilities across the continent.
In Ghana, the company has partnered with Gold Coast Refinery to scale up local artisanal gold processing to as much as one tonne per week under responsible-sourcing standards.
It is also advancing initiatives to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining and expand refining capacity in Tanzania.
As a Silver Plus Sponsor, Rand Refinery will participate in high-level panel discussions at the forum, focusing on expanding downstream processing and promoting regional cooperation to support growth in Africa’s mining sector.
“Africa has the resources and production base to become a much stronger force in the global gold market, but achieving this requires greater coordination across producing countries, stronger downstream infrastructure and policies that encourage local value addition,” Oheneba Nana Kwaku Duah said.

He added that Rand Refinery’s participation would bring important refining and downstream expertise to discussions on formalising artisanal and small-scale mining, expanding refining capacity and ensuring that more value from Africa’s gold resources is retained on the continent.
The African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026 is expected to provide a platform for stakeholders to explore common policies and strategies to strengthen Africa’s position in the global minerals market.
