Reports of efforts to oust Dampare not surprising – Prof. Aning

Security analyst, Professor Kwesi Aning says he is not surprised by reports suggesting that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is being targeted for removal.

His comments come in response to ongoing rumors regarding efforts to oust IGP, Dr, George Akuffo Dampare.

In an interview on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Prof. Aning stated that the IGP has been facing conspiracies since his appointment due to his efforts to transform the police institution and serve the Ghanaian public.

According to Prof. Aning, the IGP’s detractors will criticise him regardless of his actions, citing examples of baseless accusations, including alleged unauthorised withdrawals from the IGP’s account and dubious promotions.

He emphasised that effective leaders will always face opposition, but it’s the assessment of decision-makers that truly matters.

Prof. Aning further added that if the IGP is removed, it would not be a loss for him personally, but rather for the Republic of Ghana and its security governance.

“The day the IGP was appointed, there were conspiracies to oust him because he sort to transform his institution and the generality of the Ghanaian public, I think he has done well. I’ve seen more than six or seven different long letters, from withdrawing money from the IGP’s account from the Bank of Ghana to making dubious promotions to everything. So even if IGP Akuffo Dampare coughs during a press conference, his detractors will say why he should cough in public. So when you do a good job or try to do a good job, people will come after you. This is one of the litany of the letters and accusations.”

“I mean I can’t speak for the IGP and I don’t speak for him but if you are a leader, you also know that if you do your job well, you’ll have enemies, your enemies will always try to get you down but it is the assessment of those that will make the decisions that matters. So I’m not surprised and I think the IGP himself isn’t surprised that all these letters are flying. If he goes, it’s not the IGP as individual who loses, it’s the republic of Ghana and our security governance.”
